Kolams (கோலங்கள்)

Kolams (கோலங்கள்)

Dr. K. Kanthimathi was an artist in the way she expressed herself in writing, in the way she organized or put together many things in her life, and also in the way she drew things. Her drawing skills came in handy with the many drawings she did as part of her field of zoology, in her student days and also as a teacher. In her younger years, she indulged her artistic drawing skills by collecting several kolams (Tamil: கோலம் singular/கோலங்கள் plural) and sketching them authentically on the ground with rice flour on festive occasions. The following are scans of her kolam collection which she had recorded in a diary.

For more on the art of kolams, a South Indian/Tamil cultural tradition, read the Wikipedia entry. This Indian-Heritage.org link also provides some good information.
