My mother liked drawing kolams (Tamil: கோலங்கள்), especially in her younger years. This was one of the few ways she indulged her artistic drawing skills. I remember one Pongal in Tirupur at my grandparents' home, when she covered a pretty large area with her kolams, drawn beautifully with rice flour on the ground all around the house. If only there was easy access to a camera in those days, we could have captured that sight and preserved it like we can do now.
